Ike's Incredible Ink

We've had a busy couple of weeks at school.  It was wonderful to see so many families out enjoying books together at Camp Read last week.  What a fun evening.  Thanks to everyone who was able to pop by the classroom to say hello.  The children took the job of introducing their families to me very seriously.  Well done!  They were excited and proud to show you around their new classroom.  Thank you for making Camp Read such a great success.

Today we read a fantastic new book called Ike's Incredible Ink by Brianne Farley.  Ike, the inkblot, wants to write an incredible story but doesn't know what to write about.  He contemplates cleaning his room or calling a friend instead.  Maybe finding his favourite pen would help.  Ike decides that new ink is what he needs.  He sets off on an adventure to collect the perfect ingredients to make his very own ink.  Will the journey become the inspiration Ike needs to start his story?

The children had some laughs as they related to Ike's procrastinating.  We talked about some of the things we do when we don't have an idea for writing, like wandering, sharpening pencils, going to the washroom and chatting with friends.  Then we brainstormed where writers get their ideas from, before setting off to write this morning.  Writers get ideas from the world around them (Desiree), things they're interested in (Dominik), experiences and memories (Danielle), real life (Mrs. Russo), things they've learned (Autumn), and reading books (Benyamin).
